Shuttered Prison Trades

The old Broward Correctional Institution, which closed in 2012 due to budget custs, along with three other defunct prisons in Hendry, Hillsborough and Palm Beach counties, have netted the state millions.
Gov. Rick Scott and the three members of the state Cabinet approved the sales on Tuesday.
Florida is expected to get more than $27 million for selling off the four closed prisons and land in Miami-Dade and Volusia counties.
The money will flow into the state fund that it used to purchase environmentally-sensitive lands. Environmentalists praised the deal because during the recession the state curtailed greatly the amount of money it spent on acquiring conservation lands.
CBRE was hired by the state to market the Pembroke Park facility.
