Sears Space At Westfield Broward Mall Could Be Redeveloped With Restaurants, Entertainment

The big box Sears store at the Westfield Broward Mall in Plantation could be redeveloped for multiple tenants, including restaurants and entertainment vendors.

Seritage Growth Properties (NYSE: SRG) owns the 17.8-acre site at 8000 W. Broward Blvd. as part of its acquisition of real estate from Sears and Kmart stores. The company has been looking to reposition many of those properties as both Sears and Kmart close or shrink their stores.

The plan will go before the city’s Review Committee on Nov. 14. This property is in a highly trafficked area at the southwest corner of Broward Boulevard and University Drive – two of the county’s main roads.

The current Sears building at the Westfield Broward mall totals about 208,000 square feet. Through demolition, the existing building would be reduced to 87,194 square feet. Peter Dokuchitz, principal planner for Plantation, said Sears would occupy about half of that building, while the other half would be entertainment.

Seritage would also build 102,353 square feet of retail and restaurants in place of what’s currently the Sears auto service area. This would include a high-end steak house, several sit-down restaurants, and more retail stores, Dokuchitz said. There would also be patio areas for dining and socializing.

Connors Steak and Seafood was one of the restaurants mentioned in the proposal.

The parking spaces would be reduced from 1,155 to 1,071.

Officials from Seritage couldn’t be reached for comment. The architect is Callison RKTL.

Seritage also plans to redevelop the Sears property at the Aventura Mall and reposition a North Miami Beach shopping center where Kmart closed.
